Meru Police in Meru County have arrested two teenage girls, aged 17 and 16, for allegedly transporting 25 kilograms of bhang valued at approximately KSh750,000 from Nairobi to Maua.
The arrest happened on Tuesday evening after officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stopped a Maua Shark Shuttle vehicle traveling along the Meru–Nairobi highway. Upon inspection, police discovered several well-wrapped packages of cannabis sativa hidden inside the girls’ luggage.
According to County Commissioner Jacob Ouma, the two suspects were acting as couriers for a drug trafficking syndicate believed to be operating between Nairobi and Meru. Security agencies say they have been monitoring the route for some time after receiving reports that drug dealers were using public transport to move large consignments of bhang into the county.

Meru County Commander Patrick Labolia confirmed that the bhang, weighing about 25 kilograms, was seized and booked as evidence at Meru Police Station. The minors are currently being held as investigations continue, and police are tracing other suspects believed to be part of the network.
Authorities have warned that traffickers are increasingly using minors to evade detection, exploiting them as “safe” couriers under the assumption that they attract less suspicion.
The arrest comes amid a wider crackdown on drug trafficking across Meru County, where law enforcement agencies have intensified road checks and surveillance in an effort to dismantle the growing narcotics trade.
Local leaders and parents have been urged to remain vigilant and educate young people about the dangers of getting involved in illegal activities. Officials noted that the rising cases of drug use and trafficking are not only threatening the safety of the youth but also contributing to increased crime and school dropouts in the region.
The two suspects are expected to appear in court once investigations are completed.
