The Meru Gossip Club Code of Conduct exists to ensure professionalism, fairness, and respect in everything we do—whether it’s producing content, collaborating with partners, or engaging with our readers.
This document serves as a guide for our employees, freelance contributors, advertisers, and community members. By interacting with our platform, you agree to abide by the principles outlined below.
1. Standards for Staff & Contributors
1.1 Professionalism
- Staff must uphold the highest journalistic standards in reporting, writing, and editing.
- All work must meet our Editorial Policy and Ethics Policy requirements.
- Gossip and entertainment stories must be handled responsibly, avoiding defamatory or harmful claims.
1.2 Accuracy
- Information must be fact-checked before publication.
- Sources must be cited properly and verified where possible.
- If errors occur, staff must report them immediately for correction.
1.3 Conflicts of Interest
- Staff must disclose any personal, financial, or professional interests that may influence reporting.
- Journalists cannot accept bribes, gifts, or favors from sources.
- Freelancers must inform editors of prior relationships with subjects they cover.
1.4 Confidentiality
- Staff must protect confidential sources.
- Internal editorial discussions are private and not to be shared externally.
1.5 Social Media Conduct
- Staff should maintain professionalism on personal and public accounts.
- Posts should not bring the organization into disrepute.
- Political neutrality must be maintained when representing the brand.
2. Standards for Guest Writers & Partners
2.1 Content Guidelines
- Submissions must be original, accurate, and free from plagiarism.
- Sponsored or branded content must be clearly labeled.
- Articles must not promote hate speech, discrimination, or misinformation.
2.2 Respect for Editorial Control
- Final publishing decisions rest with the editorial team.
- Guest contributors must comply with editing for clarity, accuracy, or compliance with our standards.
2.3 Transparency
- Partnerships or collaborations must be disclosed in the content.
- Contributors must declare any conflicts of interest.
3. Standards for Readers & Community Members
3.1 Commenting Policy
- Readers are encouraged to share opinions respectfully.
- Hate speech, harassment, or abusive comments will not be tolerated.
- Spam, irrelevant links, and malicious content will be removed.
3.2 User-Generated Content
- Tips, photos, or stories submitted by readers must be truthful and lawful.
- By submitting, readers grant us a license to use and publish the content with proper credit.
- Submissions may be edited for clarity or accuracy.
3.3 Privacy and Respect
- Readers must not post private information about others without consent.
- Defamatory or false accusations in comments are strictly prohibited.
4. Workplace Conduct (Internal Staff)
4.1 Anti-Harassment
- We maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward harassment, bullying, or discrimination in the workplace.
- Staff must treat colleagues, contributors, and readers with dignity and respect.
4.2 Equal Opportunity
- Employment, promotion, and editorial decisions are made without regard to race, gender, religion, disability, or background.
- Diversity is actively encouraged in hiring and reporting.
4.3 Accountability
- Staff are held accountable for their work and behavior.
- Violations of this Code may result in disciplinary action, up to termination.
5. Advertising & Sponsorship
5.1 Clear Separation
- Ads must be clearly distinguished from editorial content.
- Sponsors cannot influence editorial decisions.
5.2 Acceptable Standards
- Ads promoting illegal products, hate speech, or explicit content will be rejected.
- Political ads must comply with Kenyan electoral laws.
6. Enforcement
6.1 Complaints
- Complaints about violations of this Code may be submitted to editor@merugossipclub.co.ke.
- Complaints will be reviewed fairly and confidentially.
6.2 Disciplinary Actions
- Violations may result in warnings, removal of content, suspension, or termination.
- Serious cases (defamation, criminal conduct) may be referred to authorities.
7. Continuous Review
This Code is reviewed annually and updated as media, technology, and community expectations evolve.

Cyber-Safety & Digital Security
9.1 Protecting Sources
- Journalists must take all reasonable measures to protect digital communications with confidential sources.
- Use encrypted communication tools where possible.
- Avoid exposing sensitive information in unprotected emails or chats.
9.2 Data Protection
- All user data collected via the website, apps, or newsletters must comply with our Privacy Policy and relevant laws.
- Staff must never share, sell, or misuse reader data.
9.3 Safe Digital Practices
- Staff and contributors must use secure passwords and two-factor authentication.
- Company devices should only be used for official work.
- Downloading unverified software or accessing suspicious links on company systems is prohibited.
10. Digital Rights & Intellectual Property
10.1 Respect for Copyright
- All staff and contributors must respect copyright laws.
- Images, videos, and audio clips used in stories must be either:
- Original creations,
- Licensed for use, or
- Properly credited under fair use.
10.2 Reader Submissions
- Readers submitting content (photos, videos, or text) confirm that they own the rights to the material.
- By submitting, they grant us permission to publish, edit, and share with attribution.
10.3 Anti-Piracy Stance
- Meru Gossip Club does not host or link to pirated material.
- Staff are prohibited from using pirated software, media, or resources in their work.
11. Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Journalism
11.1 Transparency in AI Usage
- AI tools (for transcription, research assistance, or language enhancement) may be used but must never replace editorial judgment.
- Any AI-generated content must be reviewed by a human editor before publication.
11.2 No Deepfakes or Misleading AI
- We will not create or promote deepfake videos, synthetic voices, or AI-generated images that mislead audiences.
- Satirical or illustrative AI use must be clearly labeled.
11.3 Data Ethics
- AI systems should not be trained on private or confidential data without consent.
- Bias in AI outputs must be identified and corrected by human editors.
12. Inclusivity & Representation
12.1 Fair Coverage
- Coverage should represent all genders, ethnic groups, and communities fairly.
- Stereotyping, degrading language, or cultural insensitivity is not tolerated.
12.2 Accessibility
- Content should be published in formats accessible to people with disabilities (alt text for images, captions for videos, clear fonts).
- Website features should comply with international accessibility standards (WCAG).
12.3 Language Use
- Language should remain professional, free from unnecessary vulgarity or sensationalism.
- Slang and local terms can be used only when appropriate for context.
13. Community & Social Responsibility
13.1 Positive Engagement
- Meru Gossip Club staff must foster constructive dialogue with readers.
- Community programs, local events, and charity initiatives should be supported responsibly.
13.2 Public Safety
- Stories that could endanger individuals (e.g., ongoing police operations, private addresses) should be handled cautiously.
- Content that could incite violence or unrest will not be published.
13.3 Responsible Gossip & Entertainment Reporting
- While we cover trending topics and celebrity stories, content must avoid slander and respect individuals’ dignity.
- Satirical or humorous pieces must be clearly distinguished from factual reporting.
14. Technology & Innovation
14.1 Emerging Platforms
- Staff are encouraged to explore innovative ways to tell stories (AR, VR, interactive tools).
- Experiments must still align with our editorial values and standards.
14.2 Digital Archiving
- All published content should be backed up and preserved for historical integrity.
- Significant corrections or updates must be tracked transparently.
14.3 Ethical Use of Analytics
- Audience data (via Google Analytics, Search Console, or other tools) must be used responsibly to improve content—not to manipulate readers.
- Clickbait headlines must be avoided in favor of informative titles.
15. Environmental & Sustainability Responsibility
15.1 Eco-Friendly Practices
- We encourage staff to minimize printing and embrace digital workflows.
- Partnerships with advertisers must avoid promoting environmentally harmful activities unless framed responsibly.
15.2 Sustainable Reporting
- Environmental stories must highlight both the challenges and possible solutions.
- Contributors must ensure coverage is factual and not alarmist.
16. Training & Continuous Learning
16.1 Staff Training
- Journalists and editors will receive ongoing training in:
- Fact-checking,
- Cybersecurity,
- Diversity reporting,
- Digital ethics.
16.2 Reader Education
- We commit to educating our audience on media literacy, fake news detection, and digital safety.

- Everyone connected with Meru Gossip Club—staff, contributors, advertisers, and readers—shares responsibility for upholding this Code.
- This Code is binding, not just symbolic.
- Violations may lead to internal action, legal processes, or termination of collaboration
17b. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)
Meru Gossip Club is committed to representing voices from all walks of life.
- Stories will actively seek perspectives from marginalized groups.
- Coverage avoids stereotypes and harmful generalizations.
- Hiring and collaboration prioritize inclusivity and fairness across gender, ethnicity, disability, and socio-economic background.
18. Mental Health & Wellbeing in Reporting
- Journalists are encouraged to approach sensitive stories—such as suicide, violence, or trauma—with compassion and care.
- Language that stigmatizes mental health is strictly avoided.
- Staff exposed to traumatic reporting situations will receive editorial support and, where possible, access to professional wellness resources.
19. Social Media Conduct
- Staff must maintain professionalism on personal and official social media accounts.
- Sharing unverified information or partisan opinions that compromise neutrality is prohibited.
- Journalists must disclose when they are live-reporting versus sharing personal commentary.
- Official Meru Gossip Club accounts are managed under editorial supervision to avoid misinformation.
20. Conflicts of Interest
- Staff may not cover stories in which they have financial, political, or personal involvement.
- Any potential conflicts must be declared to senior editors before reporting begins.
- Freelancers are held to the same standards of transparency and impartiality.
21. Handling Sponsored & Branded Content
- Sponsored articles, native ads, or paid collaborations will always be labeled clearly as “Sponsored” or “Partner Content.”
- Editorial staff are not influenced by advertiser requests in shaping independent reporting.
- No “pay-to-play” coverage is allowed—news must remain unbiased.
22. Protection of Minors & Vulnerable Groups
- Children under 18 will not be interviewed, named, or photographed without explicit consent from guardians, except in cases of urgent public interest.
- Images or stories involving minors must avoid exploitation or harm.
- Special care is taken when reporting on survivors of crime, conflict, or abuse.
23. Crisis & Emergency Reporting
- During disasters, elections, or civil unrest, our reporting prioritizes public safety over speed.
- Editors ensure information is cross-verified before publishing breaking updates.
- Speculative or panic-inducing reporting is avoided unless backed by solid evidence.
24. Transparency in Editorial Processes
- Readers have the right to know how stories are produced, edited, and corrected.
- When AI-assisted tools are used, a disclosure may be included in applicable stories.
- Funding, partnerships, and sponsorships will be disclosed on the site’s transparency page.
25. Environmental Responsibility in Media
- Coverage of climate, wildlife, and environment will be science-based and fact-checked.
- We avoid greenwashing—advertisers cannot mislead readers with unverified “eco” claims.
- Internal operations strive for sustainable practices (minimal printing, digital-first processes).
26. Training & Continuous Improvement
- Staff receive ongoing training in media law, ethics, digital safety, and investigative reporting.
- Annual refresher courses are required on fact-checking, data privacy, and AI ethics.
- Readers’ feedback is reviewed quarterly to improve editorial practices.
27. Global Standards Alignment
- Meru Gossip Club aligns with international journalism codes, including:
- Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) Code of Ethics.
- UNESCO Guidelines on Media Development.
- Kenya Media Council Act and Data Protection Act.
- Where conflicts arise, the strictest standard will apply to protect integrity.
28. Cybersecurity & Data Protection for Staff
- Journalists receive secure communication tools to protect sources.
- Staff must use two-factor authentication on all work accounts.
- Phishing, leaks, and cyber-attacks are reported immediately to IT and editorial leadership.
29. Reader & Community Engagement
- Constructive reader feedback is welcomed through comments, email, and social platforms.
- We moderate discussions to encourage healthy dialogue, not hostility.
- Community-led reporting (citizen journalism) will be vetted before publication.
30. Review & Updates of Policy
- This Editorial Policy & Code of Conduct is reviewed annually.
- Major updates are announced publicly.
- Readers can access archived versions for transparency.
