Meru politics has once again taken a heated turn after Ntima West MCA Patrick Ntururu openly criticized Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi, accusing him of hypocrisy and political intimidation.

According to Ntururu, the senator has no moral authority to dictate when other leaders should start their campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections. He argued that politics is a democratic process and every leader has the right to seek any position at any time.

“Senator Kathuri is not God or the Alpha and Omega to decide when we should begin our campaigns,” Ntururu said during a public address in Meru. “He should stop pretending to be the gatekeeper of Meru politics while he is also engaging in early campaigns himself.”

The MCA’s remarks come just days after Senator Kathuri urged two Meru ward representatives, DMK Kiogora and Mwenda Ithili, to hold off their senatorial ambitions and focus on service delivery for now.

However, Ntururu dismissed Kathuri’s appeal as a show of double standards, alleging that the senator himself has been traversing the county under the guise of organizing a football tournament an activity he claims is politically motivated.

“If he truly wants us to wait until 2027, why is he moving across Meru sponsoring events and meeting local leaders? Let’s not be deceived  that’s politics disguised as sports,” Ntururu added.

The growing tension highlights the early onset of political maneuvering in Meru County, where competition for key positions  including the Senate and Governorship is already shaping up long before the next general election.

Kathuri, who has yet to respond to the MCA’s latest remarks, has in the past maintained that his efforts in youth and sports development are purely non-political, aimed at empowering young people and uniting the community.

Still, analysts say this exchange signals a widening rift among Meru leaders, potentially setting the stage for a politically charged run-up to 2027.
