Ruto Faces Weak Opposition as 2027 Election Looms, Says Peter Kaluma

Political analyst Peter Kaluma has expressed confidence in President William Ruto’s prospects for a second term, arguing that the upcoming 2027 general election may not pose significant challenges for the incumbent. Speaking on the current political landscape, Kaluma highlighted that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga would have been Ruto’s most formidable rival.

“I agree with President William Ruto that the only person who would have made him a one-term president was Raila Odinga, and he is no more,” Kaluma said, underscoring the impact of Odinga’s absence on the opposition’s strength. Kaluma argued that Odinga’s long-standing influence in Kenyan politics, particularly his ability to unite diverse opposition factions, had been the main obstacle to Ruto consolidating his power. With Odinga no longer in the political arena, the analyst believes the opposition is likely to face difficulties in presenting a coherent and unified front.

Keenly assessing potential challengers, Kaluma dismissed other political figures, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, and Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, as unlikely threats to Ruto’s re-election. “Leaders such as Gachagua, Kalonzo, and Matiang’i don’t seem like worthy opponents,” he stated, suggesting that their political influence may not be sufficient to mount a serious campaign against the sitting president. He noted that while these figures have significant roles within their respective parties and the government, their appeal across the broader electorate appears limited compared to a heavyweight figure like Odinga.

Kaluma went further to suggest that the 2027 elections could be more of a formality than a competitive race. “2027 may not even feel like an election just a swearing-in ceremony for Ruto’s second term,” he observed, pointing to what he perceives as a lack of strong alternatives in the political arena. He emphasized that the current political environment, with a relatively fragmented opposition and Ruto’s growing popularity, creates conditions favorable for a smooth path to re-election.

The analyst also highlighted the evolving dynamics within Kenya’s political landscape. He noted that while new political actors may emerge
