Two Dead, Five Hospitalized After Consuming Poisoned Illicit Brew in Igembe North
Tragedy has struck Ngitana Village in Igembe North after two people lost their lives and five others were left in critical condition following the consumption of a poisoned illicit brew.
According to local reports, one of the deceased is believed to have been the brewer himself, who allegedly laced his own drink with poison before sharing it with others. The motive behind the shocking act remains unclear, but authorities have since launched investigations into the incident.
Residents say the group had gathered for a drinking session on Tuesday evening when several of them suddenly started complaining of stomach pains and dizziness. They were rushed to nearby health facilities, where two were pronounced dead, while the rest are receiving treatment in serious condition.
Police and public health officials have since visited the scene and collected samples of the brew for testing, as efforts continue to trace the source and composition of the toxic substance.

Local leaders have condemned the incident, urging residents to shun illicit alcohol and instead support licensed and safe brewing practices. They also called for stricter enforcement of laws against the sale and production of illegal drinks, which have continued to claim lives across Meru County.
The bodies of the deceased have been moved to Maua Level IV Hospital mortuary, awaiting postmortem examinations.
